As change happens at an ever-increasing pace, new skills are essential to become and stay successful. Here are some that I believe will set you apart from the pack.

  • Intuition – insight that goes beyond facts and figures
  • Empathy – understand issues from the viewpoint of others
  • Visioning – an understanding of where you and those who work with should be
  • Flexibility – keep an open mind when change must be made
  • Pro-Activity – get things done.
  • Seeing the Big Picture – step away from the daily grind to see your organization in context
  • Partnering – partnering well with others, being collaborative
  • Life-Long Learner – take every opportunity to learn new skills and get new ideas
  • Management – the superior ability to Get Things Done with other people

The next two are not necessarily skills yet equally important since they drive the value proposition which is behind you – your brand, the perceptions and recognition which those around you have and leadership and decision makers need to know.

Passion – Coasting through life, preferring to be safe rather than sorry in your career. I have had the great fortune to work with brilliant people who are also passionate about what they do and want to leave their marks on the world. They challenge others to stretch and open their minds to new possibilities. They envision what is possible, not just what is. They have a zest for life and sense of urgency that infects everyone around them. Be one of these people!

Of all the things that we measure, the one thing that makes us successful is our superior ability to lead. I chalk it up in large part to methodically working through five questions with which Peter Drucker believed every organization should grapple with.

What is our mission? Simple enough right!
Who is our customer? Put your priorities in order and gives you a reference point for critical decisions
What does the customer value? May be the most important question of them all
What are the results?
What is our plan?

It is the continuous process of strengthening what works and abandoning what does not. Although, pundits will be quick to credit any number of factors in being successful it all starts here with these basic five questions. Ask yourself these questions and determine if you’re comfortable with the answers.

Developing these skills will add value and depth to your ”tool belt” while answering these questions will provide your organization and team with an exceptional leader.
